Week 2

Dear budding chefs, welcome to week 2 of cooking at home. Fingers crossed our next cooking lesson will be with us back together in school.

 

This week we will look at two key skills from our knowledge organiser:

 

LO 1 - With support I can use a recipe to find out what ingredients and equipment I need. I can follow the method

 

LO 2 - I can weigh or measure ingredients accurately.

Let's start with our first key skill. A few weeks ago, in an English lesson, you followed a recipe to make your own delicious wrap. You then had a go at writing the recipe in your own words. 

 

A recipe tells us what we need to get to make a meal or snack, it also gives us a step by step method. It is often really important that we follow the method exactly - especially when baking, for example we wouldn't put our cake mixture in the oven and then add flour! Have a look at the slides to find out more about the different parts to a recipe. 

Have a look at a recipe book you have at home. Are they the same as the recipe in the slides? You may find they don't tell you what equipment you will need. 

 

LO 2 - I can weigh or measure ingredients accurately.

Now lets look at our second skill this week. Again it is often vey important that you stick to the measurements in the recipe, especially in baking. For example a cake needs accurate amounts of ingredients otherwise it may taste heavy and stodgy or the batter could be runny and not cook properly. 

 

Activity

Your task this week is to make a cake, try and read as much of the recipe as you can by yourself but ask a grown up for help if you get stuck. Think back to last week, what did you do to prepare yourself to cook?

 

For this next bit you must have a grown up with you as it involves using kitchen equipment and an oven.

 

Weigh or measure the ingredients. What equipment will you need to measure them accurately? Follow the method to make the rest of the cake. There are recipes below but they are just suggestions so please feel free to use your own.
